2D DRAWINGS, 3D CAD MODELING

Today a design development team should do thorough research before choosing the right CAD tools for design and analysis. 2D CAD technology has now reached to its full drawing efficiency, and all advantages have long ago been recognized. 3D CAD approach is a unique technology, capable of providing far more wide-ranging benefits over the whole of the structural and mechanical engineering process.

Whereas 2D CAD decreases time scales to some extent, 3D CAD goes much further, directly supporting the entire product development cycle, speeding up every activity and increasing the quality of design by removing many sources of imprecision and error. The 3Dimensional solid geometric model with all engineering information associated with it, becomes a totally CAD model for purposes of product design review, analysis and in a form instantly usable by all engineering manufacturing methods.

When associated with product data management and the Internet, 3D solid modeling provides an entire framework for product information flow over the collaborative design process.

Early 2D drawings provide an indirect and incomplete picture of an engineering product or system, subject to interpretation and error. Getting data in a proper form for finite element method, simulation and manufacturing processes requires additional effort and is subject to mistakes. Posting drawings digitally to partners, customers and suppliers are fine, but the potential for errors and misunderstanding remain.

By contrast, 3D CAD Modeling provides a complete and accurate geometric design of the product, analogous to a physical model. Any required geometric and physical data can derive from it for purposes of engineering analysis, simulation, and manufacture, using linked specialized applications that have become an essential part of the whole manufacturing process.

Product design and engineering data management, similarly integrated, ensures that the design product is fully and accurately reported by the time the design is complete.

Product Development and Design Process

THE PRODUCT DESIGN PROCESS:

CONCEPTUAL SOLUTIONS

Our goal in this phase is to analyze, define, explore and seamlessly connect the areas of engineering, human interface, aesthetics, manufacturing, and advanced marketing features into a philosophy that will create an environment for success.

Study methods for harmonizing and integrating philosophies, goals, questions and methods.

It is recommended that this phase serves to investigate and analyze the impact of all these project areas.  The result will yield a well-organized direction with defined milestones for the ensuing product development phases.

Meeting for a report review to document and specify project goals development schedule and design methodology.

DESIGN EXPLORATION

This phase will serve as an overall goal synopsis to allow refinement of these following points from conceptual design to a sophisticated engineered.  Our primary purpose is to explore a range of logical design solutions that assess the “theoretical SOLUTION” goals as well as with the following design points.

The developer should add a goal to generate the basis for the development of the visual and family line identity for the client with the most innovative engineering and best aesthetic design.

STYLING

Our goal will be to complete a design that has “High Perceived Quality” look regarding detailing and image.  An award winning design!

In a meeting color sketches will be presented, foam models and preliminary CAD layouts highlighting this exploration.  Our goal for the meeting is to choose the best combination of ideas to integrate into a refined concept in Phase III.

DESIGN REFINEMENT

Encompassing the full range of potential ideas, Phase III narrows its focus to only the ideas selected before.  Our goal is to condense the best ideas into two concepts.  Our first step is to refine loosely defined Phase II detailing into photo realistic renderings.  We will simultaneously begin full-size design layouts using our CAD System to resolve part inter-fit problems, assembly, and manufacturing questions.

AESTHETIC DRAWINGS FOR THE VISUAL MOCK-UPS

The developer will produce a complete package of drawings used to construct the visual mock-ups.  Also, this documentation will serve as a reference for the developer in the actual design engineering phase.

We will meet with potential manufacturers to gain the best possible tool, and part cost before the client makes a significant budgetary commitment for engineering.  Additionally, this will assure our aesthetic design meets stringent quality control requirements.

HUMAN FACTORS MOCK-UP

The approved designs from Phase III will be taken from preliminary engineering drawings to a full-size, three-dimensional mock-up.  Any other refinements discussed in the previous meeting will also be incorporated in the beautiful specification drawings.

This economical 3-D translation of our drawings will serve several purposes.

It will validate human factor and human interface studies.

Provide a basis for generating engineering documentation.

Allows finalization of color scheme, logo placement, and other aesthetic details.

It can be shown to associates and prospective buyers to review the design for implementation in the next phase of work.

PROTOTYPE

Is time to conclude the engineering design.  We work closely with the clients own engineering staff to develop drawings to a high degree allowing for a quick and efficient prototyping process.  Additionally, the 2D drawings, which will be generated on 3D CAD, can be later updated and modified for the final production drawings to give to intended vendors.

The package of engineering drawings will include full assembly view documents generated from the actual part drawings.  In this way, we will be capable of examining the inter-component fit and identifying any possible dimensional mistakes, which will save additional time in the prototyping process.

The mechanical design will reflect a high precision of inter-component fit as well as simplicity of assembly.  These considerations, properly applied, will result in an increased profit margin per product.

Reduced tooling costs.

Reduced part costs.

Inventory control.

Reduced assembly costs.

At this time we would like to be sure the drafting standards are appropriate with the client’s drafting standards to assure none or minimal rework for use as permanent part drawing documentation.

In this phase, a full working prototype will be constructed from actual production materials corresponding to the manufacturing process most preferred.

Why do you need to Build a Proof Of Concept Prototype to Demonstrate a design?

Whether you are a big company or an inventor - entrepreneur,  the proof of concept prototype is essential to successful new product development which includes the design, building, and testing/qualifying phase with multiple working prototypes. Creating a few prototypes before proving “it works the way we want it” and "fits the cost target" is, unfortunately, a common downside and results in significant cost at first. More than 75% of the cost along with highest burn rate of project dollars will be in the design and prototyping cycle. You must "massage" the original ideas to accommodate sensitive trade offs to achieve the desired goal of this phase.

TESTING AND EVALUATION

The primary reason for prototyping is to test and evaluate the engineering design before investing in expensive tooling.

A final fully functioning prototype and test evaluation report will be delivered for review and evaluation.

FINAL PRODUCTION PART DRAWINGS

The final engineering phase is perhaps the most important step in the evolution of a product.  We will first meet with the client at the end of our test/evaluation of the prototype design.  If changes or refinements required, we will begin our final production drawings.

Though the drawings, which led to the prototype, have been as accurate as possible, some design developments and refinements are likely to result from this analysis.  These changes must be recorded in our engineering documentation before final production commences.

The continuing maintenance of our documentation will facilitate production by clarifying the drawings, identifying errors, and ensuring better inter-component fit.  Also, these CAD drawings will reflect production consultation with the intended vendor.

Provided in this phase is a complete package of documentation generated on CAD denoting all tolerances, inter-component fit, production requirements, and engineering specifications.

PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT

Is time to obtain competitive bids to reduce tooling and part costs.  The manufacturer will deliver a full report on tooling, fabrication methodology and assembly procedures.

The final production engineering will consist of a complete and tested documentation package of drawings that can be used to manufacture and assemble the engineered product.  Also, the process of our engineering includes not only quality testing but “cost engineering” for the lowest product cost and the most durable design.
